TONY DUNGY, (Former) Coach of the Indianapolis Colts
"My message is always the same -- don't be fooled by what the world thinks is important. You have to pick out your dreams, follow your dreams."

Spoken by Tony Dungee, coach of the Indianapolis Colts. On January 1st, 2009, Coach Dungy announced his retirement from the world of professional football. He has a bigger mission in life now -- inspiring and helping young men in trouble.

There may be no one more inspired nor inspiring than Tony Dungy. After 31 years in the NFL and 7 years as the coach of the Indianapolis Colts (in which he became the first African American to win a Super Bowl), he announced that he is retiring from professional sports. He is ready to follow a higher calling -- spending time with his family and coaching young men who are in trouble.

As I was reading about this inspired human being, I came upon a website in which Coach Dungy talks about his new book, Uncommon, Finding Your Path to Significance. Here is what he had to say:

"My message is always the same. Don’t be fooled by what the world thinks is important. You have to pick out your dreams, follow your dreams. And helping people is much more important than making money. Who you are as a person is much more important that what you do.”

CHRIS HOGAN, HS Football Coach, Grapevine, Texas
"You are just as valuable as any other person on planet Earth."

Spoken by High School Football Coach, Cris Hogan, from Grapevine, Texas

The phenomenal story that follows was reported in ESPN Magazine’s Life of Reilly, by Rick Reilly, December 23, 2008.

It’s a high school football game in Grapevine, Texas and the Grapevine Faith are about to play the Gainesville Tornados. But, according to Reilly, everything is upside down – Grapevine has made a banner for the opposing team – the Tornados – to run through. They’ve arranged for half the Grapevine fans to cheer for the Tornados throughout the entire game. They’ve even provided cheerleaders from their own school to root for the Gainesville squad!

Unprecedented ... unbelievable ... yet here’s the Real Zeal of this story ... Gainesville is a maximum security correctional facility ... they play no home games, they have no cheerleaders, and those Gainesville football players that the fans so heartily supported? They had all been convicted of crimes!

Yet, on this magical night, instead of the disdain and contempt these players normally encounter ... they experienced generosity and acceptance. They were treated like royalty. And, it was all orchestrated by Grapevine Faith coach, Cris Hogan, whose inspired message was this ... “You are just as valuable as any other person on planet Earth.”

Inquiry for Each of Us: Can we see an opportunity where – instead of being critical and judgmental – we could be as generous and accepting as Coach Hogan and the Grapevine community? Who can we begin to treat with respect and honor right now?
